The PP-19 Bizon is a Russian submachine gun, developed in the early 1990s. It is based on the Kalashnikov AKS-74U compact assault rifle and has high degree of parts commonality. This submachine gun has been adopted by the Russian law enforcement forces. Some sources report that production commenced in 1996. Overall it proved to be a rather unsuccessful design, produced only in limited numbers.
The Bizon is chambered for 9x18 mm Makarov ammunition. The 9x18 mm round was the standard pistol and submachine gun round in the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact countries. However it is less powerful and looses in terms of penetration to the standard 9x19 mm Parabellum round.
This submachine gun uses the same trigger and safety mechanisms of the AKS-74U assault rifle. The selector level has three positions for "safe", "semi-auto", and "full-auto".
Unusual feature of this weapon is that it is fed from detachable high-capacity helical magazines. Design of these magazines was copied from American Calico designs. The Bizon magazine holds 64 rounds. It serves as a forearm during firing. This weapon has got a lot of firepower.
The Bizon has got a skeletal metal buttstock of the AKS-74U. The buttstock folds to the left. A foregrip is made of synthetic materials. Pistol grip is also similar to that of the AKS-74U.
The original Bizon has got simple iron sights from the AKS-74U. However later production models come with slightly different AK-74 style iron sights. This weapon has a side-mounting rail, that can mount various scopes. Range of effective fire is up to 100 m using standard ammunition and up to 150 m using improved armor-piercing ammunition.
