The Georgian rebels is a term used to describe the military and paramilitary forces operating under the South Ossetian and by extension the Abkhazian governments, that clashed extensively with the Georgian army.
Russia extensively supported the guerrillas with armament, supplies and training, allowing them to launch counteroffensive after counteroffensive against Georgian forces, nearly pushing them out of the two breakaway states entirely. The Ghosts were sent in to secure one of their leaders Bakur Papashvili.
