Overview Future Soldier Wildlands Breakpoint

The Heckler & Koch HK417 is essentially an enlarged version of the succesfull HK416 assault rifle, chambered for a standard NATO 7.62x51 mm ammunition. It can be seen as a follow-on to the venerable Heckler & Koch G3 battle rifle, which was used by more than 75 countries worldwide. The HK417 was introduced in 2005. Versions of this weapon, the G27 and G28 are used by the German Army. This battle rifle is also in service with nearly 20 other countries. It is mainly used by elite military units and special law enforcement forces.

The HK417 is a gas-operated, selective-fire weapon. It traces its origins back to the Colt M4 carbine, that is widely used by the US military. Its predecessor, the HK416, is an improved version of the M4, but independently made and modified by the Heckler & Koch. Internally it resembles Stoner-designed weapons, such as the M16, however it uses a patented gas piston system, derived from the Heckler & Koch G36 assault rifle, which is more reliable. All the working parts of the HK416 were enlarged to suit the larger 7.62x51 mm ammunition.

The HK417 has greater range and accuracy, that assault rifles chambered for less powerful 5.56x45 mm round, like the HK416. Though at a cost of increased weight, lower rate of fire and lower ammunition capacity (both in magazine and carriage). Due to its long range and good accuracy the HK417 is often used for designated marksman role. Also there are versions of this weapon with a shorter barrels. Three models with different barrel lengths are available. Special forces, often prefer more compact rifles, that are chambered for powerful 7.62x51 mm ammunition with greater penetrative power.
